Sikkim Won the National Tourism Award 2012-13

  1. Sikkim won the National Tourism Award 2012-13. The award was handed over to Bhim Dhungel, Sikkim’s Tourism Minister by Shashi Tharoor, Union Minister for Human Resource Development at a function at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
  2. Killa, a Marathi film won the Crystal Bear (Glasernen Bar) for the best film award by the Children’s jury in Generation Kplus section at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.  The film has been directed by Avinash Arun.
  3. 80-million rupees has been sanctioned for restoration of Bhagat Singh’s ancestral house, school and village. The legendary freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh ancestral house, school and village are in Faisalabad District of Punjab Province in Pakistan.
  4. Arun Jaitely, a BJP leader unveiled a book entitled ModiNomics: Inclusive Economics, Inclusive Governance at the Indian Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road in New Delhi. The book has been authored by Sameer Kochhar.
  5. Edward Snowden, former National Security Agency contractor, was elected as the new Rector of the University of Glasgow. He will serve the post for next three years. Snowden was nominated by a group of students at the University.
  6. RPG Life Sciences, a pharma company from India, lost the battle against the owner of domain name RPG Life Sciences complaint against the owner of the domain name was overruled by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
  7. The Reader’s Digest was sold for just 1 pound to Mike Luckwell. Jon Moulton’s private equity company, Better Capital, has offloaded Reader’s Digest UK after investing tens of millions of pounds into trying to rejuvenate the struggling business.
  8. A new system Email Miles using Global Positioning System (GPS) technology to calculate the number of miles an email has travelled before reaching an inbox was developed. The system was developed by Inventor Jonah Brucker-Cohen to show how indirect the route of many emails can be.
  9. Tom Finney, the great footballer died at the age of 91. In the English game, he was rivaled by Bobby Charlton and Staneley Matthews. He is nicknamed as the Preston Plumber.
  10. Peng Shuai of China was ranked World Number 1 in the latest Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Doubles ranking released. Peng Shuai is the first Chinese player to ascend to the top of the WTA’s doubles ranking.
