Canada Announced to Open Consulate General in Bangalore

  1. Consulate General of Canada will be located at the World Trade Centre in the Bangalore. The office of Consulate General will work on the supervision of Visa and Immigration services.
  2. Third World Congress on Agro-Forestry was held from 10 to 14 February 2014 in New Delhi, India for the first time. The theme of the Congress is Trees for Life.

  4. The Union cabinet approved the establishment of the Satellite Centre of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education (PGIMER), Chandigarh at Sangrur, Punjab. The Project would be the part of Scheme of Redevelopment of Hospitals and Institutions undertaken in the 12th Five Year Plan.
  5. Balu Mahendra aged 75 died in Chennai due to cardiac arrest. Mahendra was an award winning film director and cinematographer. He won the national award for best cinematography in 1983 for Moondram Pirai, which was the first national award in acting for Kamal Haasan.
  6. Indian Navy kicked off its largest exercise with both the western and eastern fleets in the Bay of Bengal for intensive combat maneuvers. This is a month-long exercise of combined fleets was embarked by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral DK Joshi and Flag Officer Commanding-in- Chief Naval Command Vice Admiral Anil Chopra.
  7. The Union Home Ministry laid down guidelines for mercy petition. The Ministry spelt out the broad parameters for considering mercy petitions under Article 72 of the Constitution.
  8. Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) board approved the new corporate governance norms in a meeting held in New Delhi. The new corporate governance norms would become applicable for all listed companies with effect from 1 October 2014. The new corporate governance norms issued are in line with the global practices and in accordance with the Companies Act, 2013.
  9. Parliament of Belgium legalised death to terminally ill children of any age. With this action, Belgium, the Catholic country, became the second country after Netherlands to allow mercy-killing for children and the first to lift all age restrictions.
  10. Huge snow storm that blanketed the densely North-East of United States in third week of February 2014 after wreaking havoc with ice in South has been termed as Snowmaggedon. This snow blanketing has led to power cut in about 7 lakh 50000 houses, mostly in South Carolina and Georgia. The natural calamity has also led to cancellation of 6500 flights
