Assam Became the First State to Legally Ban Smokeless Tobacco

  1. Assam became the first state to legally ban consumption of all forms of smokeless tobacco, including pan masala containing tobacco and nicotine.
  2. Konsam Himalaya Singh became the first Lieutenant General in the army from North East States. Singh is the senior most serving officer in the army from Manipur. At present Singh is serving in the military secretary’s branch which is headquartered in New Delhi.
  3. Delhi government approved the Delhi Nagar Swaraj Bill. The Bill seeks to make the people of the city a part of the decision making process. The Bill is aimed at decentralizing power to grassroots by setting up Mohalla Sabhas across the New Delhi. It gives power to the common people to solve problems at the local level and run day to day administration.
  4. Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched third-line drug therapy for people living with HIV/AIDS. The third-line therapy also called salvage or rescue therapy is prescribed for people who have limited drug options left.
  5. The Union Ministry of Urban Development gave an in-principle approval to the Phase – I of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The approval by the Union Government  will facilitate the State Government to take necessary action for faster implementation of the project.
  6. South Africa launched a commemorative silver stamp of Nelson Mandela.  This Black and white stamp is released to mark the 24th anniversary of release of Nelson Mandela after spending 27 years in the jail.
  7. Sammakkaa Saarakka Fair also called as Jatara, the largest tribal religious congregation of the world began in Andhra Pradesh at Medaram in Warangal district of the Telangana region. Sammakkaa Saarakka is a 4-day biennial fair and it is participated by more than a crore of devotees from far-flung areas like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Maharastra, Odisha, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
  8. Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Government of India signed for a 275 million dollar loan for improving rural road connectivity in five states. The states include Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.
  9. Tractors India Pvt Ltd has acquired from Caterpillar Global Mining LLC, the expanded Cat Mining equipment distribution and support business for its territories.
  10. Karnataka won the Irani Cup for the fifth time beating Rest of India in the final held at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Karnataka beat Rest of India by an innings and 222 runs to win the trophy. Karnataka last won the Irani Cup in 1998 at the same venue under Venkatesh Prasad.
