R.K.Tiwari : Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)

  1. R.K.Tiwari was appointed as the new chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
  2. Indian-Origin Ashok Varadhan was appointed as the co-head of the Goldman Sachs’ securities division. This division is the most profitable and the largest unit among the global investment bank’s four units.
  3. The 101st Annual Session of Indian Science Congress (ISC) was held at the University of Jammu, Jammu & Kashmir from 3 February 2014 to 7 February 2014. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister of India.
  4. 8th Defence Expo was organized at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi from 6 February 2014 to 9 February 2014. The DefExpo was Organised by the Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) was the event manager of the DefExpo 2014.
  5. India was ranked 8th in the list of ten countries in terms of digital governance. The report on digital governance was released by Accenture. The list was topped by Singapore followed by Norway and UAE at second and third place respectively.
  6. The Vice President of India M. Hamid Ansari launched the India-China Year of Friendly Exchanges. The Year 2014 has been designated by the Governments of India and China as the Year of Friendly Exchanges.
  7. India and Netherlands signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for intensifying cooperation on renewable energy. The MoU was signed between the Dutch Ambassador Alphonsus Stoelinga and the Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Dr. Satish Balram Agnihotri.
  8. Former Hollywood child star Shirley Temple (85) passed away. Born in 1928, Temple became a major star after getting her first film role at the age of three. She was the first recipient of a special juvenile Oscar at the age of six. She holds the record as the youngest ever Oscar winner.
  9. 103 persons were killed in Algeria when a military aircraft C-130 Hercules crashed in the mountains of Algeria. This was the deadliest air disaster since independence of the country. The crash happened due to the poor weather condition.
  10. International Olympic Committee (IOC) revoked the ban imposed on Indian Olympic Association (IOA). The step paved the way for India’s return into the Olympic fold. The decision of IOC of lifting the ban imposed on IOA came just after the IOA held elections as per IOC directives.
